Rough Comparison of Invariant Profile
Here is a Nikon D700 shot rendered in ViewNX2 (Standard Picture Control) and Lightroom 3 using the Camera Standard v2 Invariant profile. Apart from roughly matching the sharpening they are default.

I was rather surprised in a recent test of mine to find that results with Capture NX2 were almost identical to the v2 Invariant profile. I didn't doubt your profile but I've never been keen on NX2!
ReplyDeleteWhilst playing around with your profiles and writing my article, I started to wonder about the stage of post-processing at which the selected profile should be applied.
Commonsense tells me it should be right at the start, but the fact that Lightroom places the Calibration panel at the bottom suggests otherwise.
What is your take on this and how would it affect the end result if the profile was applied after adjustments had been made to exposure, etc?
I will do the tests myself, but wondered if you had looked at this already?

I usually select the profile as the first step, sometimes I'll do WB first if I know that will change a fair bit. The profile gives you your base tone curve as well colours, so I consider it a foundation for the rest of the adjustments. I use Camera Standard as the default Picture Control in the Camera and as my LR default and then move from there. I find I use Portrait for portraits and Landscape for some landscapes. I rarely find Vivid much use. Neutral can be useful for high contrast situations and the D2X Mode 2 profile is good when you want accurate colour, like product shots.
